E-Way Bill
Mandatory electronic compliance document in India for moving goods worth over ₹50,000. Generated on the GST portal, linking consignor, transporter, and consignee.
What is an E-Way Bill?
The E-Way Bill is a mandatory electronic document under the Indian GST regime for the movement of goods valued at more than ₹50,000 (₹1,00,000 in some states for intra-state movement). It is generated on the GST E-Way Bill portal and serves as proof that the consignor has declared the shipment for tax purposes.
When is an E-Way Bill required?
- Inter-state movement of goods worth more than ₹50,000
- Intra-state movement above the state-specific threshold
- Movement by road, rail, air, or vessel
- Includes job work, sales returns, and inter-branch transfers
Certain goods (like fresh fruits, vegetables, and personal effects) are exempt — the full exemption list is maintained by the GST Council.
Who generates the E-Way Bill?
Typically the consignor (supplier). However, the transporter can also generate it if the consignor has not — using the consignor’s GSTIN and shipment details.
What information goes into an E-Way Bill?
- Consignor and consignee GSTIN and address
- Invoice or document number and date
- HSN code and value of goods
- Vehicle number and transporter ID
- Source and destination PIN codes
How long is an E-Way Bill valid?
Validity is calculated based on distance:
- Up to 200 km: 1 day
- Every additional 200 km or part thereof: 1 additional day
- For over-dimensional cargo, the validity is calculated differently (20 km per day)
If a shipment is delayed beyond validity, the E-Way Bill can be extended — but only within 8 hours before or after expiry.
Common compliance pitfalls
Most freight delays and penalties happen because of broken E-Way Bill workflows: vehicles change mid-route without updating the bill, vehicle numbers are entered incorrectly, validity expires due to transit delays, or extensions are missed.
How HashTMS handles E-Way Bills
HashTMS generates, extends, and cancels E-Way Bills directly from the trip record — no separate portal logins, no double entry. Vehicle changes auto-update the bill. Expiry reminders fire 4 hours before validity ends. Bulk generation handles fleet-level operations without manual intervention.
