Lorry Receipt (LR)
The primary transport document in Indian road freight — proof of receipt by the transporter, contract of carriage, and the document against which delivery is taken.
What is a Lorry Receipt?
A Lorry Receipt (LR), also called a Consignment Note or “Bilty” in some regions, is the document issued by a transporter when goods are picked up from the consignor for road transport. It is the foundational document for any Indian road freight movement and serves three purposes simultaneously:
- Acknowledgment of receipt — proof the transporter has taken physical custody of the goods
- Contract of carriage — terms under which the transporter agrees to deliver
- Title document — the consignee typically takes delivery against the LR
What goes on a Lorry Receipt?
A standard LR contains:
- LR number and date
- Consignor (sender) name, address, GSTIN
- Consignee (recipient) name, address, GSTIN
- Description of goods, number of packages, weight
- Freight charges and payment terms (paid / to-pay / FOR)
- Vehicle number and driver details
- Origin and destination
- Signature of the transporter or driver
LR vs. E-Way Bill — what’s the difference?
These are often confused but serve different purposes:
- LR is the commercial document between consignor and transporter — proof of carriage and contract terms
- E-Way Bill is the tax compliance document under GST — proof to the government that goods are declared
Both are typically required for the same shipment, but they live in different systems and serve different audiences.
Why LR management matters for margins
LR-related issues cause 30–40% of disputed billings in Indian logistics:
- Missing or illegible LRs lead to delayed payments
- Mismatched LR numbers between transporter and shipper create reconciliation headaches
- Lost paper LRs slow down POD collection and invoicing
- Manual LR numbering across branches causes duplicates
How HashTMS digitizes Lorry Receipts
HashTMS auto-generates GST-compliant Lorry Receipts the moment a trip is created. Each LR has a unique auto-incremented number, is digitally signed, and is shared with the consignor, consignee, and driver instantly. POD is captured against the LR in the driver app — no paper, no scanning, no lost documents.
