Consignment Note

Consignment Note — alternate name for a Lorry Receipt; the primary transport document acknowledging receipt of goods by a road transporter in India.

What is a Consignment Note?

A Consignment Note is the document issued by a transporter acknowledging receipt of goods from the consignor for movement to a destination. In Indian road freight, it’s most commonly called a Lorry Receipt (LR) or “Bilty” (in some regions and in older usage).

The three names refer to essentially the same document — what differs is regional/industry convention:

  • Consignment Note — formal / contractual usage, common in shipping and freight forwarding
  • Lorry Receipt (LR) — the dominant name in Indian road freight
  • Bilty — older or vernacular usage, especially in North India

What information is on a Consignment Note?

  • Unique consignment note number and date
  • Consignor (sender) name, address, GSTIN
  • Consignee (recipient) name, address, GSTIN
  • Description of goods, package count, weight, value
  • Origin and destination
  • Vehicle number and driver details
  • Freight charges and payment terms (paid / to-pay / FOR)
  • Transporter signature

Consignment Note vs. E-Way Bill

These are often confused but serve different purposes:

  • Consignment Note / LR is the commercial document between consignor and transporter — proof of carriage and the contract terms
  • E-Way Bill is the GST compliance document — proof to the government that goods are declared

Both are typically required for the same shipment, but they live in different systems.
